Sunday Dinners at Thistle

Thistle may keep a low profile, but this small restaurant in wine country ups the ante on Sunday evenings. Mike Thelin just released their early spring guest chef dinners.  They’ve managed to lure some of Portland’s top chefs to man their stove in McMinville for one night.  Each chef is paired with a local [...]

She’s at it again! My husband’s cousin’s wife Clare Crespo is the nutty genius behind YummyFun Kooking.  The LA Times is showing off some of her latest (nearly edible) crocheted creations just in time for Mardi Gras.  Crespo, a native of New Orleans, is the author of “The Secret Life of Food” and “Hey There, Cupcake!”. Vday with din din

Swoon your sweetie with dinner at din din this Valentine’s.  Or fly solo and see what happens.  Chef Courtney Sproule says, “the theme is sexy: sexy food, sexy drink, sexy people.  I’m thinking luscious custards, liquor-laced sauces, lace and pearl-adorned cooks and servers.  Bring a date or just hope to get lucky with someone at your table!”

Virtual cooking school? Web-based cooking classes could never replace the benefits of physically participating in a cooking class with other students eager to learn.  (And I’m not just saying that because my job depends on it.)  Enjoying good food with others is partly what makes hands on cooking classes so fun and rewarding.
But the new [...]

The  Oregon Truffle Festival is January 29 – 31.  The 5th annual three-day celebration of these spendy fungi takes place in and around Eugene.  Scheduled events include cooking classes, mushroom hunts, seminars and tastings.  The chef lineup is impressive.  If your dog likes to sniff around under trees this could prove to be a lucrative [...]

Crystal White

I could not believe my eyes.  In disbelief, I approached the ugly bottle on the shelf at the Food Front Co-op grocery store.  A giant (40 oz) bottle of dish soap for $2.29? Next to the other over-designed bottles on the shelf, the yellow bottle of
Crystal White liquid detergent made by Colgate-Palmolive looked retro. Really, [...]
