Kids say the funniest things. I was back home in Louisville last week when my mom showed me two thin cookbooks from my childhood. She keeps both in the kitchen next to the slightly more adult Joy Of Cooking and the La Varenne Pratique. But the one above is by far the most entertaining; I read it five times over the course of two days. In 1984, while the ladies of the Junior League of Louisville met to work on their latest cookbook, their children played, colored and though I don’t remember it, talked about favorite recipes of their own. I was about 4 years old. Nearly every recipe in this tiny cookbook makes me laugh out loud. Here are a few of my favorites–but I can honestly say they are all equally hilarious, especially one that instructs: “Go to the store and buy um!”. All recipes were composed in question and answer style, with original art work! Carter Markham had life figured out early. I ended up going to high school with Miles Harvey. Whoever Cleo and Hector were, they must have been well fed.

Fun stuff! My kindergarten teacher did something like this with every class. I still have mine – my recipe was “Applesauce with cinnimon and rasins” – my favorite after school snack of the time!
DELICIOUS.
This is my favorite stuff ever. Check out the archives of This American Life for an episode called ‘Kid Logic’. We were just brilliant. Wha happun?
Hahaha, the Michael Jackson shake is just genius!
That is fabulous. I love the Michael Jackson shake, too.
